Rhodes to Recovery

A documentary exploring the reality of mental health, addiction, and the transformative power of Jesus Christ through the personal stories of individuals in active recovery, professionals, and advocates in their respective fields.

My name is Alec Rhodes, and I am currently a Graduate student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, getting my master’s degree in digital media production. As someone who has faced their own mental health and addiction challenges, I have deep empathy and compassion for those who are still fighting their own battles. As part of my master's thesis portfolio, I have decided to direct and produce a spec documentary called “Rhodes to Recovery,” which will explore the realities of mental health, addiction, and the transformative power of Jesus Christ. My mission for this film project is twofold: first, to highlight the mental health and addiction epidemic affecting the United States in an innovative way to educate the public through interviews with mental health and addiction professionals, as well as advocates in their respective fields. Second, to inspire and give hope to those still suffering in darkness by documenting the progress of real individuals on their road to recovery.Sharing the stories of these men and women, who devote their lives to helping those in need or are in active recovery themselves, will hopefully serve as the catalyst that compels viewers to take the first step towards healing, radical transformation, and true freedom.

LoglineA spec documentary exploring the reality of mental health, addiction, and the transformative power of Jesus Christ through the personal stories of individuals in active recovery, professionals, and advocates in their respective fields.SynopsisThe spec documentary takes viewers on an expedition by following two subjects beginning their recovery journey from mental health and addiction, showcasing how a holistic approach from professionals and advocates may empower them to experience radical transformation and true freedom. As the documentary unfolds, viewers witness how characters devote their lives to something greater than themselves, serving as the catalyst that shapes each individual, both in recovery and in their everyday lives. Through moments of victory and defeat, the film will explore the significance of personal identity, connection with others, and the sovereign grace and reckless love of Jesus.HistorySince its founding nearly 250 years ago, the United States has been plagued by a mental health and addiction epidemic, with over 58.7 million American citizens diagnosed today. As a result, these adverse effects have generated a range of significant problems, including major public health concerns. Unless radical change is implemented, the next generation may inherit irreversible consequences. Why a spec documentary first?A spec documentary is like a pilot or long trailer of the type of content that I hope to continue producing. Following the completion and distribution of this film, I plan to collaborate with strategic investors, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other reputable platforms, to create a docuseries of a similar style. In this docuseries, I will run from Washington, D.C. to California and back in one year as an investigative journalist. I will listen and pray with dozens of men and women in active recovery, mental health and addiction experts, and leading advocates to share a powerful narrative that will hopefully become a valuable resource for those in deep despair, facilitating others to begin their recovery journey. Sharing the stories of these individuals, who devote their lives to helping those in need or are in active recovery themselves, will hopefully serve as the catalyst that compels viewers to take the first step towards healing, radical transformation, and true freedom.STORY ARCAct IAct I introduces each of the six characters in the documentary. The first two begin their recovery journey from mental health and addiction. The second two are respected mental health and addiction professionals. The last two are well-known advocates for mental health and addiction. Act II features footage of testimonials and day-in-the-life segments of the characters in active recovery. This act will also capture in-depth interviews of both professionals and advocates in the mental health and addiction field that apply to the storyline.Act IIIAct III continues to follow each of the two characters in active recovery as they endure in the face of their respective challenges by unlocking their true identity in the context of authentic relationships. As the narrative of each individual in recovery shows progress, the film reflects on how far each character has come and asks where they will go next.APPROACHNarrative Style DocumentaryThe documentary employs non-linear storytelling, intertwining events from the past and present, introducing raw emotions, relapses, recovery milestones, and positive outcomes of both characters in active recovery.CinematographyThe film applies a verité style for documentary elements, with natural lighting and handheld camera movement. It prioritizes a polished, cinematic style for sit-down interviews.Music & SoundThe film features an original score and sound design written and produced by artists and musicians in long-term recovery or who have a loved one who is, creating a sense of authenticity by captivating the audience.Editing StyleThe documentary employs diverse pacing, with faster cuts for high-energy scenes and slower cuts for emotionally impactful scenes. This technique allows the film to capture the ecstasy and gravitas of the characters and their experiences.*Transitions between past and present storylines are triggered through sit-down interview content with each of the six characters to facilitate a smooth narrative flow.CHARACTERSTo be determined.LOCATIONRecovery Character LocationsFeature locations where each of the characters in active recovery is living to build connection and depth between viewers.
